The Ninja, also known as Shinobi, were skilled at stealth tactics and used a variety of weaponry, including the Ninjato sword, throughout Japan's warring age. They were mysterious because they lived in secret despite their extraordinary abilities. Because of this, there aren't many documents on them, which makes it challenging to find out specific information about their weapons. In the lack of concrete proof, specialists have speculated on the type of blade they would have used. Others have suggested the katana or shinobigatana. However, historical study on the ninja reveals that they employed a variety of weapons to complete their missions.

History of Ninjato

The existence of the ninjato sword from earlier eras is still a mystery, much like many other aspects of ninja history. Swords are often used by ninjas to carry out their tasks, although the swords that are commonly referred to as "ninja swords" were actually manufactured during the Edo period. Since then, no authentic ninja swords have been found. In contrast to samurai, whose swords frequently revealed their clan allegiance, ninjas sought to conceal their identity. Because of their concealment, ninjas probably avoided carrying weapons that might identify them.
Regretfully, there isn't much tangible evidence from the Sengoku to the Edo periods that fits the ninjato's definition. It is only possible to reconstruct this blade's history with clarity starting in the 20th century.

Characteristics of the Ninjato

According to some research, the ninjato's straight blade was inspired by a similar-wielding god named Fudo Myo Oh, who is revered as the patron of ninja families. The sword, which ninjas utilized for both fighting and other purposes, is considered to be the most important weapon among historians who specialize in Japanese military history. They also imply that, for ease of use and practicality, ninjas favored shorter blades.
