Longclaw: Jon Snow's Valyrian Steel Sword in Game of Thrones

In an incredible sequence from Game of Thrones' ninth season, Jon Snow defeats a menacing Wight to save Lord Commander Jeor Mormont. He gave Jon Snow an award to show his appreciation for saving him. He gives Jon Longclaw, his Valyrian steel sword.

Longclaw, however, isn't just any blade... It has a past. It has been in Mormont's family for many generations. And as Mormont is aware that Jon is fundamentally a Stark wolf at heart, he has it recreated with a wolf pattern. Consequently, Jon receives this legendary sword—fit for wolves and bears alike—which is a crucial indication of Mormont's respect and belief in him. It's like a warrior passing the light (or sword, in this case) to another warrior.

In "Baelor," Lord Commander Mormont treats Jon Snow like a son and shows him respect. After passing on his own son, Jorah, Mormont hands Jon the cherished sword, Longclaw, from their family. This strange act suggests Mormont believes Jon will become the Night's Watch leader in the future.

When Jon Snow unsheathes Longclaw, he finds that the word is forged of Valyrian steel. Then Mormont relates its history, explaining that it was intended for his disgraced son Jorah, who abandoned it upon being banished by Ned Stark for trafficking slaves.
In recognition of Jon's bravery and the fact that he and his direwolf, Ghost, saved his life, Mormont gives Jon the sword. "That's a man's sword," he says, giving Jon instructions to keep it secure.  

Mormont thinks he's made the proper decision, seeing Jon as the most worthy winner of the distinction. Jon's Night's Watch allies applaud him and say he deserves Longclaw. Jon lets Grenn, Pyp, and the others handle the sword while they avidly inspect it.

History Of Longclaw Sword

Longclaw, the Valyrian steel bastard sword, belonged to Jorah Mormont for a very long time until he abandoned it. Jeor's sister Maege returned it to him. A longclaw's length falls between that of a longsword/broadsword and a two-handed greatsword. It is a sword that is half-hand. Since Longclaw is the ancestral sword of the House Mormont, Jon suggests returning it to Jorah in "Beyond the Wall," reasoning that he has no legal claim to it: "Your father gave me this sword." Though the pommel has been changed from a bear to a wolf, Longclaw remains."
Jorah takes the sword for a short while but gives it back to Jon as she knows he will use it properly.

Jon And His Longclaw Sword

The Valyrian steel blade, Longclaw, becomes a symbol of Jon Snow's quest and fighting skills throughout the series. Longclaw was first presented to Jon by Lord Commander Mormont as a sign of confidence and leadership. Jon uses Longclaw in a number of battles, such as the Battle of the Bastards and encounters with wildlings. The sword proves its worth against White Walkers, as Jon successfully defeats one during the attack on Hardhome and later discovers its effectiveness in destroying the undead. Longclaw also plays a pivotal role in Jon's personal encounters, such as executing Janos Slynt and facing Ramsay Bolton in single combat. Despite moments where Jon considers returning it to Jorah Mormont, Longclaw remains with him until the end, symbolizing his resilience, honor, and dedication to protecting the realm from the threats beyond the Wall.

In Season 8, During the Battle of King's Landing, Jon uses Longclaw to kill several Lannister soldiers and later a Northern soldier. While leaving for the lands beyond the Wall, after his exile to the Night's Watch, Jon takes the sword with him.
